Sedation Options

Every Level of Comfort. All Under One Roof.

From mild relaxation to deep sedation, our anesthesiologist recommends the right option for your needs, your procedure, and your comfort level.

Nitrous Oxide

Laughing gas inhaled through a small nose mask. Mild, immediate relaxation without putting you to sleep. Effects disappear within minutes — you can drive home yourself.

  • Safe for adults and children
  • You stay awake and responsive
  • Wears off immediately
  • Ideal for mild anxiety

Oral Sedation

A prescription pill taken about an hour before your appointment. Deep relaxation — most patients drift in and out of light sleep and remember little to nothing. You’ll need a driver.

  • No IV required
  • Moderate-to-deep relaxation
  • Most patients have no memory of the visit
  • Great for anxiety and longer procedures

IV Deep Sedation

Expert Level

Administered by our board-certified anesthesiologist. Deep relaxation — near unconsciousness. You have little to no awareness of the procedure. Sleep and smile — the best experience in a dental office.

  • Board-certified anesthesiologist on staff
  • Deep sedation — you won’t remember anything
  • Rapid onset, precisely controlled
  • Ideal for oral surgery, implants, complex cases
  • Continuous monitoring throughout
  • Get most of your treatment completed in one visit

General Anesthesia for Complex Procedures

For extensive surgical cases, our anesthesiologist can provide general anesthesia right here in our office — the same level of care you’d receive in a hospital, without the hospital setting. Coordinated with our oral surgeon and specialist team.

  • Full unconsciousness for complex cases
  • Hospital-grade monitoring in our office
  • Board-certified anesthesiologist manages everything

Common Questions

Anesthesiologist FAQs

Does Island Dental have an anesthesiologist on staff?

Yes — and that’s a rare thing. Island Dental has a board-certified dental anesthesiologist on staff for over 25 years at both our Franklin Square and Levittown locations. IV sedation is administered by a trained specialist with decades of experience — not just a dentist with a weekend certification.

Will I be completely unconscious?

It depends on the level. Nitrous oxide keeps you awake. Oral sedation makes you very drowsy. IV deep sedation produces a state where you won’t remember anything. Our anesthesiologist will recommend the right option for your case.

Is sedation safe?

Yes. When administered by a board-certified anesthesiologist with continuous monitoring, sedation is extremely safe. Your health history is reviewed thoroughly. Your vitals are monitored throughout. Emergency protocols and reversal medications are always on hand. You’re in the safest hands possible.

Can I be sedated for a routine cleaning?

Absolutely. Sedation is available for most procedures at Island Dental — including routine cleanings. If dental anxiety has kept you away from the dentist, this is how you get back on track comfortably.

How do I prepare for sedation?

For oral or IV sedation, fast for 6–8 hours before your appointment. Arrange a responsible adult to drive you home. Wear comfortable clothing. We walk you through every detail at your free consultation so there are no surprises.

Does insurance cover sedation?

Coverage varies by plan and procedure. Sedation for oral surgery or complex cases is more likely to have some coverage. We verify your benefits before your appointment and explain costs in advance. 0% financing is available for anything insurance doesn’t cover, subject to approval.

What is the difference between a dentist who offers sedation and an anesthesiologist?

An anesthesiologist completes years of specialized training in administering and managing sedation and anesthesia — it’s their entire focus. A dentist who offers sedation may have taken a short course. At Island Dental, your sedation is managed by a board-certified specialist whose sole job is your comfort and safety.
