When a Tooth Cannot Be Saved, We Plan What Comes Next.

A tooth may need to be removed because of severe decay, fracture, infection, periodontal damage, failed prior treatment or lack of space. Before treatment, we review the reason for extraction and discuss replacement options when appropriate.

Common Questions

Oral Surgery FAQs

Will my oral surgery procedure hurt?

No. You will not feel discomfort during your procedure. At Island Dental, we use local anesthesia and offer multiple sedation options — nitrous oxide, oral sedation, and IV sedation administered by our board-certified anesthesiologist Dr. Glassman. Most patients are surprised by how comfortable it is. Post-procedure soreness is normal and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter medication.

Can all four wisdom teeth be removed in one visit at Island Dental?

Yes. In most cases, all four wisdom teeth can be removed in one visit at our Franklin Square or Levittown office. Our periodontist Dr. Kay and dentists performs the procedure while Dr. Glassman, our board-certified anesthesiologist, monitors your IV sedation from start to finish if you choose. You sleep through it and wake up with it done.

How long is recovery after a tooth extraction?

Most patients feel significantly better within 1–2 days. The extraction site heals fully over about 4–6 weeks. Wisdom tooth removal may take 2–3 days of soreness. We provide detailed aftercare instructions at discharge and our team is available by phone throughout your recovery.

Does Island Dental place dental implants in-house?

Yes. Island Dental places and restores dental implants entirely in-house — from single-tooth implants to full-mouth All-on-X cases. Our Periodontists and dentists place the implant, our on-site lab fabricates the restoration, and your dentist finalizes the result. All specialists under one roof. We also offer a CT scan and exam to determine if you’re an implant candidate.

Can I get an implant the same day as my extraction?

In many cases, yes — this is called immediate implant placement. It depends on infection status, bone quality, and other factors. We evaluate this at your free consultation with a CT scan and recommend the best timing for your implant. Everything happens in one office.

What is a sinus lift and do I need one for dental implants?

A sinus lift is a procedure that adds bone to your upper jaw between your jaw and sinus cavity. It’s sometimes needed before placing implants in the upper back teeth, where bone height may be insufficient. At Island Dental, our oral surgeon and periodontist perform sinus lifts right here in our office. We determine if you need one at your free consultation with a 3D CT scan.

What is bone grafting and do I need it before a dental implant?

Bone grafting rebuilds the jawbone where it has been lost after an extraction or due to gum disease. Without enough bone, an implant has nothing to anchor into. At Island Dental in Franklin Square and Levittown, sometimes place a bone graft at the time of extraction to preserve the socket and shorten the path to your implant. Not every patient needs grafting — we determine this with a 3D CT scan at your free consultation.

What is tori removal and does Island Dental perform it?

Yes. Tori are bony growths that can develop on the upper palate or along the lower jaw. They’re usually harmless but can interfere with dentures, speech, or comfort. Our board-certified periodontist removes tori right here in our office with sedation options available. The procedure is straightforward, and recovery is typically quick.

Does Island Dental perform oral biopsies?

Yes. If you have an unusual spot, growth, or lesion in your mouth, we perform biopsies right here in our office. Early detection matters. The dentist evaluates the area, takes a small tissue sample, and sends it to the lab for analysis. Results are reviewed with you personally. Everything handled under one roof.

Who provides anesthesia during oral surgery at Island Dental?

Dr. Glassman, our board-certified anesthesiologist, is on staff at our Franklin Square and Levittown offices. He administers and monitors IV sedation from start to finish. This is a level of safety and comfort most dental offices cannot offer. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are also available and administered by your treatment team.

How much does oral surgery cost at Island Dental?

Cost depends on the procedure. We provide a clear estimate before any treatment begins — no surprise bills, ever. Your consultation is free. We accept most insurance plans and offer 0% financing so you can move forward without financial stress. Free consultation · 0% financing available · Insurance accepted.

Does insurance cover oral surgery procedures?

Extractions and many oral surgery procedures are typically covered by dental insurance. Bone grafting and implant coverage varies by plan. We verify your benefits before any procedure and explain out-of-pocket costs upfront. If there is a gap, our 0% financing plans can cover the difference. We maximize your insurance to minimize your costs.

Is oral surgery safe for older adults or patients with medical conditions?

Yes. We review your full medical history and medications before any procedure. Having Dr. Glassman, our board-certified anesthesiologist, on staff means we can safely manage sedation for patients with complex medical histories — including heart conditions, diabetes, or blood-thinning medications. Your safety is our top priority.

Do you offer free CT scans for dental implant evaluations?

Yes. Island Dental offers a free CT scan and exam to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants. The 3D CT scan shows your bone structure, nerve locations, and sinus anatomy — everything needed to plan your case precisely. Schedule your free implant evaluation at our Franklin Square or Levittown office.

What types of dental implants does Island Dental place?

We place every type of dental implant — single-tooth implants, multiple-tooth implants, full-arch All-on-X implants, and implants for implant-supported overdentures. From placement to final restoration, everything is done in our office with our on-site lab. All specialists under one roof. One team from start to finish.

Do you accept second opinions for oral surgery?

Absolutely. Second opinions are always welcome at Island Dental. If you’ve been told you need an extraction, bone graft, implant, or any oral surgery procedure and want another perspective, come in for a free consultation. We’ll give you an honest evaluation with no pressure and no obligation. We speak Spanish.
