Healing After Implant Surgery
Dental implant recovery is smoother than most patients expect. The key is understanding the healing timeline, following post-operative instructions, and knowing when to call us. Most patients return to work within 1–2 days and resume normal activities within a week.
At Island Dental, we use PRF (Platelet-Rich Fibrin) plasma therapy to accelerate your healing. This advanced protocol uses your own blood platelets to promote faster bone regeneration and tissue repair — giving you a significant head start on recovery.

- PRF therapy accelerates healing
- Detailed post-operative instructions provided
- Follow-up appointments included in your treatment
- 24/7 emergency line for post-surgery questions
- Temporary teeth keep you smiling during healing

Every patient heals differently, but here’s a general timeline for implant recovery.

- Progress check-up to monitor integration
Month 3–6: Osseointegration Complete
- Implant fully fused with jawbone
- Ready for final restoration (crown, bridge, or arch)
- No dietary restrictions
- Final restoration crafted in our on-site lab
- Your permanent, beautiful smile is complete
What to Eat and What to Avoid
Proper nutrition helps your body heal. Here are guidelines for each recovery phase.
First Week: Soft Foods
- Smoothies, protein shakes, yogurt
- Mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, soup
- Oatmeal, applesauce, soft pasta
- Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, and chewy foods
Weeks 2–6: Gradually Firmer Foods
- Soft bread, cooked vegetables, fish
- Ground meat, soft fruits, rice
- Avoid hard nuts, popcorn, and raw vegetables
After 6 Weeks: Most Normal Foods
- Resume a normal diet as comfort allows
- Avoid biting directly on the implant site until cleared
Caring for Your Implant for Life
Dental implants are cared for just like natural teeth. Good daily habits and regular check-ups protect your investment.
- Brush twice daily with a soft-bristle toothbrush
- Floss daily around the implant
- Use a water flosser for hard-to-reach areas
- Visit Island Dental for regular check-ups and cleanings
- Avoid chewing ice or using teeth as tools
- Don’t smoke — smoking increases implant failure risk
- Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth

Implant Recovery FAQs
Initial recovery takes 1–2 weeks. Full osseointegration (implant fusing with bone) takes approximately 3 months. You have temporary teeth during this time and can resume most normal activities within the first few days.
Stick to soft foods for the first week — smoothies, yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes. Gradually reintroduce firmer foods over weeks 1–2.
Avoid strenuous exercise for the first 3–5 days. Light walking is fine from day one. Most patients can resume their full exercise routine within 1–2 weeks, depending on the extent of their procedure.
We strongly recommend not smoking, especially during the healing period. Smoking restricts blood flow, slows healing, and significantly increases the risk of implant failure. If you smoke, talk to us about a plan to minimize risk.
Contact us immediately if you experience severe or worsening pain after the first few days, excessive bleeding that doesn’t stop, pus or discharge from the surgical site, fever, or an implant that feels loose. These are uncommon but should be addressed promptly.
Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF) therapy uses your own blood platelets to create a healing concentrate that’s applied at the surgical site. It accelerates bone regeneration, reduces inflammation, and improves implant success rates.
