Why Bone Grafting Is Sometimes Needed
After a tooth is lost or extracted, the surrounding jawbone begins to deteriorate. Over time, this bone loss can make the jaw too thin or too shallow to support a dental implant. Bone grafting restores the missing bone, creating a solid foundation for successful implant placement.
The procedure involves placing bone graft material at the deficient site. Over several months, your body integrates the graft material and regenerates new, strong bone. Once healing is complete, the site is ready for implant placement.
- Rebuilds jawbone density and volume
- Creates a solid foundation for implant placement
- Multiple graft material options available
- PRF plasma therapy accelerates healing
- Performed in-office by our oral surgeon
- Sedation options for maximum comfort
- Often done at the same time as extraction
Your Bone Grafting Journey
Evaluation & 3D CT Scan
We assess your bone density with a 3D CT scan to determine the extent of bone loss and the type of graft needed. This scan is included in your free consultation.
Bone Grafting Procedure
Our oral surgeon places the graft material at the deficient site. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia with sedation options available. PRF therapy is applied to promote faster healing.
Healing & Bone Regeneration
Your body integrates the graft material and regenerates new bone over 3–6 months. We monitor healing with follow-up appointments and imaging.
Implant Placement
Once the grafted area has fully healed and regenerated, the site is ready for implant placement. The entire process — grafting through final implant — happens in our office.
Advanced Grafting With PRF Technology
Our oral surgeon and PRF protocol give you the best chance for successful bone regeneration and implant placement.
PRF Plasma Therapy
Platelet-Rich Fibrin uses your own blood platelets to accelerate bone healing — faster regeneration, better outcomes.

Bone Grafting FAQs
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia, so you won’t feel discomfort during surgery. Post-procedure discomfort is typically mild and managed with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. IV sedation is available for patients who want maximum comfort.
Initial recovery takes a few days. The bone regeneration process takes 1 to 3 months before the site is ready for implant placement. PRF therapy at Island Dental helps accelerate this healing timeline.
Several options are available: autografts (your own bone), allografts (donor bone), xenografts (animal-derived), and synthetic materials. Our providers recommends the best option based on your specific situation and the amount of bone needed.
Cost varies based on the type of graft material and the extent of the procedure. We provide a detailed cost breakdown at your free consultation. Insurance may cover a portion, and 0% financing is available, subject to approval.
