Pediatric dentistry at Island Dental — gentle care for children

General dentistry, children’s dental care, orthodontics & specialists — all under one roof for the whole family. All done in one place. Everyone deserves a beautiful smile. We speak Spanish.

Why Start Early

Early Care Builds Healthy, Happy Smiles for Life

We see most children. Early dental visits help us catch developmental concerns before they become problems, protect primary teeth, and — most importantly — build a positive relationship with dental care from day one.

Children who have great early experiences at the dentist carry that comfort into adulthood. You’re not just protecting their teeth — you’re setting them up for a lifetime of confident smiles. Results and reviews don’t lie.

Second opinions always welcome. We love meeting new families.

  • Catch developmental problems early — when treatment is simpler
  • Prevent cavities with fluoride and sealants
  • Build a genuinely positive relationship with dental care
  • Monitor spacing and alignment for early orthodontic intervention
  • Orthodontic appliances and interceptive orthodontics with our in-house orthodontist — early diagnosis and treatment reduces or eliminates the need for extensive care later in life. Preventative care is the answer.
  • Hygienists on staff for a great experience — teaching kids about brushing and the importance of oral health care
  • Radiation-conscious digital imaging and intraoral photos to document our findings and share them with you — complete transparency of what we see
  • Invisalign® Teen, clear and metal braces, and habit-breaking appliances available
  • Coach parents on diet, brushing, and habits that matter
  • Automated recall reminders to help you keep on track and avoid potential issues

Bring the Whole Family — We Treat Everyone.

No need for separate offices or separate teams. Island Dental has general dentists, an orthodontist, a periodontist, and specialists all working together in one office. Children, teens, parents, grandparents — you can all be seen at the same location. A team of specialists all under one roof — no referrals, no waiting.

What We Offer

Comprehensive Pediatric Dental Care

Children’s Exams & Screenings

We see most children. Children’s exams and screenings include a thorough look at primary and permanent teeth, screening for early decay, and coaching parents on proper brushing, diet, and habits. Early detection means simpler treatment, if necessary.

Routine Checkups & Cleanings

Twice-yearly exams and professional cleanings for children. Our hygienists use gentle hand scaling, a Cavitron ultrasonic scaler, and a prophy jet to keep teeth clean and healthy. We make cleanings fun and encourage kids to be active participants in their own oral health. Did you know most preventive dental services are covered 100% by most insurance carriers, sometimes subject to a small deductible?

Fluoride Treatments

Professional fluoride varnish at each cleaning strengthens enamel and significantly reduces cavity risk — especially important for high-cavity-risk children.

Dental Sealants

Protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back molars to prevent food and bacteria from causing cavities. Highly recommended for children ages 6–12.

Pediatric Fillings

Tooth-colored composite fillings for children — with nitrous oxide available to keep the experience comfortable. We restore primary teeth when needed to protect spacing.

Orthodontic Screening

We monitor bite and jaw development at every visit. Early orthodontic intervention is available right here — our in-house orthodontist means no outside referral, no second office.

Sports Mouthguards

Custom-fitted athletic mouthguards for children and teens in contact sports. Far more protective and more comfortable than anything you’ll find at a store.

Emergency Pediatric Care

Knocked-out tooth? Broken tooth? Dental pain? Call us immediately — we prioritize pediatric emergencies and can often see your child the same day. Walk-ins always welcome.

Nitrous Oxide for Kids

Laughing gas is safe, effective, and commonly used to help nervous children relax, if necessary. It wears off immediately, requires no recovery time, and makes the whole experience much easier.

Digital Imaging & Intraoral Photos

We use digital imaging to take pictures of your child’s mouth so you see what we see. Intraoral photos are taken to properly document conditions, track changes over time, and monitor your child’s dental history with clarity. Improved record-keeping means better care at every visit.

Nightguards for Kids & Teens

Custom nightguards fabricated in our in-house lab for children and teens who grind their teeth. We’ll discuss the benefits and find the right option for your child’s comfort and protection.

Common Questions

Pediatric Dentistry FAQs

When should my child’s first dental visit be?

We see most children. We recommend bringing your child in once they are old enough for a comfortable, productive visit. Our team will help you determine the right time. Early visits establish the relationship, catch any concerns, and teach parents proper care techniques.

My child is afraid of the dentist. What do you do?

We see this every day and we’re very good at it. We go slowly, use child-friendly language, and let kids see and explore our dental instruments before anything starts. Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available, if necessary, to help nervous children relax — it’s safe, effective, and wears off immediately. We never push a child through a procedure they’re not ready for.

Do baby teeth really need to be filled?

In many cases, yes, if necessary. Primary teeth hold space for permanent teeth, help with chewing and speaking, and affect alignment. An untreated cavity can spread, cause pain, and lead to early tooth loss — which can shift other teeth and create problems later. We evaluate every case individually and recommend what’s genuinely in your child’s best interest.

Does insurance cover pediatric dental care?

Most dental insurance plans cover children’s preventive care — exams, cleanings, X-rays, fluoride — at 100%. Coverage for restorative care varies by plan. We verify your benefits before every visit and explain costs in advance so there are never surprises.

How much does a child’s dental visit cost without insurance?

Cost should never stop a child from getting the care they need. Island Dental offers 0% financing and an in-house membership plan for families without insurance. We provide a clear cost breakdown before any treatment begins. Call our Franklin Square or Levittown office to learn more about your options.

Does Island Dental have a pediatric dentist on staff?

No. Island Dental does not have a pediatric dentist on staff but we see children regularly. Your whole family can be treated here. No separate offices.

Do you have an orthodontist on staff for kids?

Yes. Our in-house orthodontist works closely with the general dental team. If we spot alignment or bite issues at your child’s checkup, early orthodontic intervention can begin right here — no outside referral, no extra office. Everything stays under one roof at Island Dental.

What sedation options do you offer for children?

Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is our first choice for nervous children — safe, effective, and gone within minutes after the mask is removed. For more involved procedures or children with severe anxiety, IV sedation is also available, administered by our board-certified anesthesiologist. Your child’s safety and comfort always come first.

Can the whole family be seen at Island Dental?

Absolutely. Island Dental treats the whole family — kids, teens, parents, and grandparents. Pediatric care, general dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, and more are all available at both our Franklin Square and Levittown locations. One office, one team, one visit for everyone. We make it easy for your whole family to smile.

Where are your pediatric dental offices located?

Island Dental sees pediatric patients at both our Franklin Square and Levittown locations on Long Island. We are not pediatric dentists. Both offices are warm, welcoming, and fully equipped with the same caring team, the same specialists, and the same full range of services for children and adults alike. Visit our locations page for directions and hours.
