Retainers & Aftercare — Protecting Your New Smile for Life

You invested time and money in a straighter smile. A retainer is the insurance policy that keeps it that way. Without one, teeth can shift back toward their original position within months. Here’s everything you need to know about retainers and post-treatment care.

Overview

Why Retainers Are Non-Negotiable

After braces or Invisalign™, your teeth are in their new position — but the bone and ligaments around them haven’t fully stabilized yet. Without a retainer, teeth naturally want to drift back toward their original alignment. This is called relapse, and it can undo months or years of orthodontic work.

A retainer holds your teeth in place while the surrounding bone remodels and solidifies around them. Most patients wear their retainer full-time for the first few months after treatment, then transition to nighttime-only wear. With consistent retainer use, your results last a lifetime.

  • Prevents teeth from shifting back after treatment
  • Full-time wear initially, then nights only
  • Multiple retainer types available
  • Custom-fitted for maximum comfort
  • Replacements available if lost or damaged
  • A separate purchase after active treatment
  • Regular check-ups ensure continued fit

Retainer Options

Types of Retainers We Offer

Different retainers suit different needs. Our orthodontist recommends the best option for your case.

Clear Retainers (Vivera/Essix)

Custom-molded clear trays that fit over your teeth — similar in appearance to Invisalign™ aligners. Virtually invisible, comfortable, and easy to clean. Vivera retainers by Invisalign™ are 30% stronger than other clear retainer materials.

Fixed (Bonded) Retainers

A thin wire bonded to the back of your front teeth. Permanently attached, so you never have to remember to wear it. Ideal for the lower front teeth where relapse is most common. Requires careful flossing but delivers 24/7 retention.

Combination Approach

Many patients benefit from a bonded retainer on the lower teeth and a clear removable retainer for the upper teeth. This gives you the reliability of a fixed retainer where it matters most, with the flexibility of a removable option on top.

The Process

Your Retainer Timeline

1

Treatment Complete & Retainer Fitting

On your last day of Invisalign™ or braces, we fit your custom retainer. For clear retainers, a quick scan or impression is taken. For bonded retainers, the wire is placed and bonded during the same appointment.

2

Full-Time Wear (First 3–6 Months)

Wear your clear retainer 20–22 hours per day — essentially the same schedule as your aligners. This is the most critical period for stabilizing your results.

3

Night-Only Wear

After the initial stabilization period, most patients transition to wearing their retainer only at night while sleeping. Our orthodontist determines when you’re ready for this transition.

4

Regular Check-Ups & Replacement

We check your retainer fit during regular visits. Clear retainers typically need replacement every 1–3 years depending on wear. Bonded retainers are checked for integrity at each cleaning.

Common Questions

Retainer & Aftercare FAQs

How long do I have to wear my retainer?

The honest answer: for life, at least at night. Most patients wear their retainer full-time for the first 3–6 months, then transition to nighttime-only wear indefinitely. Teeth naturally want to shift throughout your life, and a retainer prevents that.

What types of retainers are available?

We offer clear removable retainers (Vivera by Invisalign™ or Essix-style), fixed bonded retainers (a thin wire on the back of teeth), and combination approaches. Our orthodontist recommends the best type based on your case and lifestyle.

What if I lose or break my retainer?

Contact us right away. The sooner you get a replacement, the less chance your teeth have to shift. We can fabricate a new retainer quickly. Walk in or call — we’ll take care of it.

How much does a replacement retainer cost?

Replacement retainer costs vary by type. Clear retainers are generally affordable, and our membership plan provides 20% off. We provide the exact cost before making a new one. Island Dental Membership Plan members receive the discount on retainer replacements.

Can my teeth shift back even with a retainer?

If you wear your retainer as directed, your teeth will stay in their corrected position. Skipping retainer wear — even for a few weeks — can allow teeth to begin shifting. The longer you go without wearing it, the more movement can occur. Consistency is key.
