Traditional fillings can reduce the strength of your natural tooth whereas a dental inlay or onlay is designed to strengthen or repair your tooth. They are used in place of a typical dental filling to treat either tooth decay or structural damage to your tooth. They are composed of either porcelain, gold, or a composite resin and is bonded to the damaged areas of your tooth. An inlay is usually placed inside the cusp tips of the tooth and the onlay is used mostly for reconstruction of the tooth. An onlay usually extends beyond one or more cusps of the tooth.

Inlays and onlays are prefabricated in the lab and are bonded to the tooth and typically last between 10 and 30 years. An inlay or onlay offers a good alternative to a crown. To place an inlay or onlay, you will need two separate appointments, one to remove the decay or damage and take the impression of the tooth and the other to place the inlay or onlay.
Inlays and onlays are strong and stable and are an option when there is minimal tooth reconstruction to be done. You can continue to brush and floss regularly after the procedure.
